Due to having problems with my DMP1 skipping, I sent out a survey to all members of the list to try to find a pattern. I was hoping to find something that could be done to avoid the skipping. I concluded that the best way to avoid skipping is to mount the DMP1 non rigidly in the passenger area of the car. You can draw your own conclusions based on the results shown below:

When does it skip?
Never 19 Frequently 2 Bump Only 0 Freeway 5 Excessive 0 Other 1
Vehicle Type:

{Interesting split here... mid-sized cars seem to be the
point where the ride transitions from soft to firm, so
it's interesting that there's a clear dividing point here!}
Mounting Orientation:
Yes No Vertical 5 4 Horizontal 3 14 Oblique 0 0
{I'm not sure that there's enough data here, but it looks
like the user manual was wrong to suggest a vertical mount!
Then again, this number might be skewed by the fact that
most of the horizontal mounts were soft mounts (laying on
carpeted floor),so I'm not certain what to think of this.
It would be harder to mount it non-rigid in a vertical
orientation. -- I'm going to call this one a wash since
the vertical orientation suggestion may be to avoid catastrophic
failure}
Mounting Type:
Yes No Rigid 6 3 Soft 0 11 Unmounted 1 4 Semi-Rigid 1 2
Mounting Location:
Yes No Under Seat 0 12 Passenger 1 2 Cargo, far 3 2 Cargo, close 3 2 Dash 0 0 Other 1 0
{These seem to be the big dividing point! Soft mounting in the
passenger area seems to be the ideal solution! Remember as a kid
wanting to sit in the back seat of the schoolbus because it was
more fun going over the bumps? I think that I've reproduced that
experience for my DMP1 being rearward of the rear wheelwell.}
General File Bitrate:
Yes No <128 0 0 128 2 3 192 0 4 256 1 5 320 1 2 VBR 2 2 Other 2 2
{It doesn't look like bitrate has anything to do with it... I was thinking
that high bitrate files require more consistent reading from the drive,
thus they'd skip more, but apparently that's not a factor, though I do
think that my low bitrate files skip less, they still skip}
Interesting Comments:
I removed it from the rigid mounting and use velcro. I can stick it
to the same place it used to skip, or to the floor, and there is
not a problems any longer.
The Miata - stiff ride from the factory, then I stiffened the suspension, and fitted lower-profile tires making for a pretty rough ride. In this car, the DMP1 skips occasionally, seemingly more in response to whoop-dee-doos and dips rather than normal bumps. I'm guessing these longer-duration-but-lower-G-force events probably cause the disk more seek failure stress than brief jarring bumps. (I listed you as semi-rigid!)
I've only had the boat on the water once with the DMP1 installed, but it skipped frequently. Did not happen when hitting rough water. It did skip on several occasions shortly after hitting waves, like maybe it was a delay because of music buffered up in memory. Not positive on that though. It has not happened enough times to draw any conclusions.
It skipped once, so did my heart. (it was a hell of a dip) But overall, never.
