SimpleCenter has gone through a number of iterations. The original fixes were posted to the Yahoo group as individual class and properties files. It was up to each user to unpack the simplecenter.jar file and apply the fixes and put it back into rotation. These individual files are still available on the Yahoo Forum Archived Files section

Locally Cached Start Page Mod

Enhancement to SimpleCenter to enable users of SimpleCenter to not have to rely on SimpleCenter's ability to connect to the Internet. Previous version displayed an annoying message saying that "Internet Connection Required. Try again." While the product works, in the most part, this annoying screen may have prevented some users from fully utilizing SimpleCenter.

A set of local HTML and support graphics have been delivered with this release. Additionally, a new text file called onlineState.properties has been delivered to the C:\Program Files\SimpleCenter directory. This is a text-editable file.

To control the initial state of the cached page, alter the value inside this file as the directions dictate:

com.lumkichi.omnifi.online.status=online

The locally cached page can also be controlled from inside SimpleCenter by pressing the Go Offline and Go Online buttons now available in the Media Guide Page. Pressing this button does not affect the ability to stream media content from the Internet. However, if you really are not connected to the Internet at some time, then the locally cached page will display automatically, and you will not be able to stream any content from the online services.

You will still need to be connected to the Internet to be able to complete the initial registration with OmnifiMedia.

This version advertised 50,000 song limit, but incorrectly incorporates the 20,000 song limit version. To obtain the 50,000 song limit fix for this version, you can edit the /SS-INF/simpleserve.properties file as follows:

Change the line: 

simpleserve.allmedia.maxsize=20000

With 

simpleserve.allmedia.maxsize=50000

Do not use any commas or decimals or spaces as it will cause SimpleCenter to encounter a NumberFormatException and default to 10,000 songs automatically.

ShoutCast recording now controlled by Start/Stop button

Topcoder99's ShoutCastStreamer.class file and a few others were modified in placing a new button on the PlaybackControlPanel used to control the recording (start and stop) of the ShoutCast Stream only. While a recording functionality exists for YahooLaunchCast, no such attempt has yet been made to connect the button function to that streamer.

Caveat: The following "quirks" exist

  1. Pressing record where there is no ShoutCast stream present, results in only a toggle between "Recording Enabled" and "Recording Disabled" (by design, and not a quirk)
  2. While record is enabled and a ShoutCast stream becomes available, the button will change color to blue with the letters "Rec" and a MP3 recording begins. (design)
  3. If a recording is stopped in the middle of a recording, it cannot start recording again until the next song title becomes available, or a new Stream channel is selected. The user may toggle between Enabled / Disabled until such time.
  4. If a user changes from recording a ShoutCast stream to selecting another service (such as LaunchCast or Virgin Radio), the status of the record button becomes indeterminant. Pressing it repeatedly may or may not be caught by the appropriate stream (in this case--ShoutCast), but nothing will happen as there is no recording at the moment and no streams to record even if recording is enabled. Once a ShoutCast stream is selected again, the recording will resume iff there isn't another file in the current ./stream directory with same filename
  5. This mod makes no attempt to adjust for the 10 second METADATA change that seems to start the next file with the last 10 seconds of the previous song at the beginning. That would best be handled by TopCoder.

Note

Orphan Song Checker Added

Periodic checker that will scan your media library for orphaned links to HD media (mp3's, wma's). Orphaned links can occur for the following reasons:

  1. Renamed a catalogued media file on the HD. SimpleCenter can no longer find it by name
  2. Moved a catalogued media file on HD to another directory
  3. Catalogued media file exists on a removable media (such as a pendrive) and it is not connected
  4. File was removed / deleted

This mod will go through the media library and search for any references to these missing files, and remove them. If the files are located in a watched directory, they will be automatically added by SimpleCenter's other feature (watched folder scan).

The mod will run automatically every 5 minutes when installed, but can be configured to enable / disable the scan-delete feature as well as change the frequency. This configuration is effected from SimpleCenter's MEDIA LIBRARY pane. On the menu bar is a new menu Item "Orphan Checker Settings..." Press this button, and a new window appears.

An enhanced feature of "ignore directories" has been added. Here, you can specify directories (using full drive letters on a Windows machine) or Linux / unix directory names. Mutiple entries are separated by commas. The following list describes how the entries are interpreted: 

String provided:  C:\My Music, G:\, /usr/music
  C:\My Music  ->  converted internally to "/c:/my music/" and compared against the file's URI
  G:\          ->  converted internally to "/g:/"  This will match everything on G:\ drive
  /usr/music   ->  converted internally to "/usr/music/"

Additionally, C:\My Music, C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\ ->
  converted to  "/c:/my music/"  and  "/c:/documents and settings/user/my documents/"
so that it more closely follows SimpleCenter's internal URI format (*nix convention)

All files in these directories and their subdirectories will be matched and will not be considered for deletion from the media library. This is useful if you store certain songs on removable media or you are migrating your SimpleCenter installation from one machine to another and want to maintain your song and playlist and file structures, but haven't gotten the destination directories completely figured out.

50,000 Song Limit Issue

This is the first release that the 50,000 song limit has been correctly applied. Previous versions only had the 20,000 song patch created by Cameron Milne initially and incorrectly perpetuated as a 50,000 song capable version. Thanks to Bryan Chow for pointing this out.

Users who attempt to add more than 10,000 songs to SimpleCenter may begin to experience performance issues borne out of SimpleCenter running out of memory. In those cases, you must replace the C:\Program Files\SimpleCenter\simplecenter.lax file with the one delivered in the C:\Progrma Files\SimpleCenter\Special Files\ directory. This updated file will increase the JVM heap sizes (initial and maximum) to help accomodate the increased memory usage requirements. Users who catalogue less than 10,000 songs should not have to concern themselves with this file.

Warning

Bigger and more are not necessarily better. Users who catalogued >17,000 songs have reported sluggishness in SimpleCenter navigation. In certain cases, navigation on the DMP1 with >10,000 may cause the DMP1 to "hang." or respond very slowly, especially when navigating using the >> and << buttons (double arrows).

LaunchCast Fixes & Enhancements

  1. Enabled LaunchCast to work with Record Button like ShoutCast does
  2. Changed the recorded filenames from meaningless System Time (in milliseconds) to "Artist – Title.wma" format
  3. For songs that record until completion, the song Title and Artist names are written into the ID tags so that it can be recognized by SimpleCenter
  4. Repaired the strange condition where every selection of a LaunchCast channel on the DMS1 evoked TWO distinct songs to be recorded—one would always be recorded partially (a song that is not currently streaming), the other would be recorded fully (the currently streaming song). Now only one song (the currently streaming) will be recorded.
  5. Tons of logging

ShoutCast Fixes & Enhancements

  1. Enabled & better error handling of streams, especially during errors
  2. If currently recording and it encounters an error, it will release the song (applying any ID3 tags)
  3. If currently recording and user disables recording, it will release the song (applying any ID3 tags)
  4. If a song was "accidentally" or unintentionally recorded, it will now erase any files that were created that have less than 10 frames written to disk. This might aid in keeping clutter down.
  5. Added ability to record multiple, simultaneous streams (DMS1 and the PCPlayer)
  6. Writes the ID3 tags to the file immediately after releasing the song.
  7. Tons of logging

SimpleCenter Fixes & Enhancements

  1. Repaired a previously undetected condition where the "Record Button" shows that recording is disabled, when it might actually be enabled for recording. Now, the Record Button will ALWAYS force recording disabled when SimpleCenter is started up.
  2. Added code to help prevent invoking ShoutCast and LaunchCast multiple times. Don't still know why this occurs, but can detect when it does occur and keep from having too many copies of the Streamers running.

Wish List & To Do's

  1. Enable a n-second delay to stop recording ShoutCast streams in response to Metadata change.
  2. Enable a m-second dual-record feature so that the original file is still recording while the new song's file is also recording. This will ensure that the trailing stream of one song is fully captured while the beginning of the next song is captured properly in the other file. The files will have to be truncated beginning and ending somewhat to strip off extraneous stream info, but that is better than the current alternative—that is to cut the head off the new file and attach it to the end of the old file (this is borne out of the 10-second Metadata issue with ShoutCast)
  3. Design and implement a GUI form for adjusting the 10-second delay, changing the recording directory
  4. Better handle the synchronization of the Record now button status. After a while the button may become confused and indicate recording when it really is not, and vice versa. Issues are compounded when multiple sources are recording at the same time (DMS1 and PC Player).

Known issues

  1. Certain ShoutCast channels cause DMS1 and/or PC Player to go bonkers and cycle through stations
  2. Certain ShoutCast channels change Metadata rapidly and constantly causing recording feature to fail (See appendix of README.doc)
  3. Yahoo LaunchCast recording ONLY works when streaming to the DMS1 unlike NullSoft ShoutCast which can record from streams captured by DMS1 and the PC Player and even while they're simultaneously recording. There is a fundamental difference in design between the implementation of the two streamers.

LaunchCast Fixes & Enhancements

Got the wish list done. Here's more:

  1. enable ShoutCastStreamer.class to work with Streamripper to expertly cut the file streams (so that we won't have to use the m and n second kludge)
  2. enable periodic cleanup of old ShoutCast Channel Lists and download the latest list
  3. enable LaunchCast PCPlayer to be able to record LaunchCast stream like the DMS1 does
  4. get rid of the onlineStatus.properties and keep the locally cached page preference in tthe persistent Preferences class
  5. enable navigation by Folders

Known issues

Bug Fix

Repaired a bug introduced by version J wherein the Playlists import function places the imported playlist in the ALL MEDIA folder. Additionally, the imported playlists were not available to be sync'd with the DMP1. Certain songs will hang the Playlist import process.

  1. Replaced Orphan Checker Settings button with Scanner Settings button

Streaming Media Enhancements

  1. Removed reference to Virgin Radio stations by IP address and replaced them with URL's
  2. Added a new ShoutCast genre (News & Public Radio)

Streaming Media Enhancements

  1. Added a ShoutCast stations refresh feature which is activated on startup of SimpleCenter. The existing ShoutCast stations are deleted from the database, and SimpleCenter is allowed to pull down new information. This helps prevent "stale" ShoutCast information residing in the system which eventually leads to stations no longer playing.

  1. Repaired the unfortunate condition where streaming LaunchCast to the DMS1 no longer worked correctly.

SimpleCenter Repair & Changes

  1. Applied (yet again) the 50,000 song mod to the simplecenter.jar.
  2. Include the SimpleCenter version number and Java JRE versions to the simplecenter.log
