Description

USB Cable specially made for the DMP1 and come supplied with the kit. It is 6 feet in length with a standard USB A connector on one end and a modified USB Mini-B connector on the other.

The modified end serves three purposes

  1. establish USB connection to DMP1 HD cartridge
  2. prevent HD cartridge from having power before USB cable is connected
  3. prevent tampering with the 5 electrical connectors on the underside of the HD cartridge while in operation

Additionally, some users have reported that the USB cable supplied with the DMP1 is too long and will not work properly when the HD is plugged into their home PC. (The HD cartridge might not be recognized as a removable device). If that is the case you have one of two easy options:

  1. plug a USB1.1 HUB into your PC, then plug the HDD into the HUB
  2. use a shorter cable (see below)

Cross Reference (Unconfirmed)

Other USB-A to USB Mini-B or USB "Version 2.0" cables have been known to work. For example the HotSync cable supplied with Palm Zire is one such cable. It is shorter than the one supplied with the DMP1 and proves less problematic for some users.

Other possible cables:

  • Sony DSC Digital Camera (F707, 717, U20)
  • Lyra MP3 players
  • Olympus Camedia Digital Camera
  • Some types of USB card readers

Caveat

The white cable shown above appears to be remarkably similar to the DWL-120R's cable. However, the DLW-120R's mini-USB end is much, much smaller than the one used by either the DWL-121 or the HDD cartridge and will not work...
